What It Does
Candelilla wax is a hard, brittle vegetable wax derived from the leaves and stems of the Euphorbia cerifera shrub, a plant native to the arid regions of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. It is composed primarily of hydrocarbons (approximately 50%), esters, free acids, and resins, giving it a notably higher hardness and a melting point of around 68–73°C compared to beeswax, which means it is used at lower concentrations (typically 50–75% of the beeswax amount) to achieve equivalent hardness in formulations. Formulators prize it as the definitive vegan alternative to beeswax in lip balms, lipsticks, and solid sticks, where its excellent film-forming properties and natural shine contribute to a smooth, glossy finish.
