What It Does
Montmorillonite is a naturally occurring smectite clay mineral composed primarily of hydrated sodium calcium aluminum magnesium silicate, mined from ancient volcanic ash deposits. When labeled as Rose Clay, it contains trace amounts of iron oxide that give it a characteristic pink hue, making it particularly popular in facial masks and cleansing formulations. Formulators value montmorillonite for its exceptional swelling capacity (up to 15 times its dry volume), high cation exchange capacity, and ability to absorb excess sebum and impurities while providing a silky skin feel.
