Phytosphingosine is a naturally occurring sphingoid base found in the stratum corneum and a key component of ceramides in human skin. This bioactive lipid exhibits potent antimicrobial properties against acne-causing bacteria (C. acnes) and fungi, while simultaneously supporting skin barrier function and reducing inflammation. Formulators value it for its dual action in treating acne-prone skin without irritation, as well as its ability to normalize sebum production and promote skin healing at concentrations typically between 0.1-1%.
