What It Does
Adeps Bovis is rendered bovine tallow, a lipid fraction obtained from the adipose tissue of cattle, historically one of the oldest known skin-care ingredients. Its fatty acid composition — dominated by palmitic (~26%), stearic (~20%), and oleic (~43%) acids — closely mirrors the lipid profile of human sebum, which is widely cited as the reason it integrates so readily into the skin barrier and imparts a distinctly 'second-skin' feel that many plant-based alternatives struggle to replicate. Formulators working with cosmetic-grade, triple-rendered, deodorized tallow choose it specifically for its semi-solid consistency at room temperature (melt point 42–47°C), which enables stable whipped textures and anhydrous balms that melt cleanly on contact with skin, as well as its utility as a pigment-wetting and dispersing matrix in color cosmetics.
