What It Does
Amorphophallus konjac root powder is derived from the corm of the konjac plant (Amorphophallus konjac), a perennial herb native to subtropical and tropical Asia, where it has been cultivated for over a thousand years as both a food and traditional remedy. The powder is composed primarily of konjac glucomannan (KGM), a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide (typically 200,000–2,000,000 Da) with an exceptionally high water-binding capacity — capable of absorbing up to 100 times its own weight in water — making it one of the most efficient natural gelling agents available to formulators. Its unique ability to form thermoreversible or thermoirreversible gels (depending on pH and processing conditions) and its excellent film-forming and skin-smoothing properties make it a preferred choice in clean-beauty and natural formulations, particularly in wash-off masks, cleansing powders, and powder-to-gel textures.
