What It Does

Betula Alba Tar is a dark, viscous, polycyclic aromatic-rich substance obtained by the dry distillation (pyrolysis) of white birch bark. It has a long history of use in traditional European dermatology for the treatment of chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis, owing to its keratolytic, antipruritic, and antimicrobial properties. The rectified form diluted to 10% in dipropylene glycol (DPG) is preferred by formulators to standardize potency, improve handling of the otherwise thick and intensely odorous raw material, and facilitate incorporation into topical therapeutic and cosmetic preparations.
