What It Does
Benzophenone-3, also known as oxybenzone, is a synthetic aromatic ketone UV filter that absorbs UV radiation across both UVB (280–320 nm) and short-wave UVA (320–360 nm) ranges through a photochemical energy-dissipation mechanism. It is a lipophilic, fine crystalline powder with high solubility in oils, waxes, and organic solvents, making it particularly effective when dissolved directly into molten wax matrices to provide internal UV protection. Formulators select it for its broad-spectrum UV absorption, proven efficacy at low use concentrations (typically 0.1–1%), and long track record in stabilizing color and preventing photo-oxidative yellowing in wax-based and lipid-rich systems, though its use is subject to regulatory concentration limits and increasing scrutiny over skin penetration and environmental persistence.
